Edition Lame Tunes - Felix Gebhard
Once, a long time ago, Tomte Singer Thees Uhlmann was looking for some kind of singer/songwriter to play support
for his band on tour. Max (Tomte Keyboardist) said he knew this guy, but he lives in Malmö, Sweden and he is
having a bad time at the moment (whatever that meant). But after a 20 minute phone call to Sweden everything was clear,
and it was decided that Felix Gebhard, aka Home of the Lame would go on tour with Tomte.
So then he stood before us. He really did look like a Lumberjack who is half Swedish, half Canadian but with Irish ancestors. And every night he played his wonderful songs for us, and we loved them that much that after half of the tour, Tomte Bassist Olli Koch and Keyboardist Max Schröder went on stage with him every night to play along in his songs as if they had always been a band. And Felix found his way. Through the music and through a melancholic lack of understanding for the world he lives in. And this can be heard in each of his songs. It was the end of August and now, thinking back, I guess it was the last day on that the air did not smell of atumn but still of summer, when Felix was on stage in the Kato in Berlin at a show with Walter Schreiffels and when I could finally see what Felix, and what Home of the Lame was all about. With his Cruz Records Cap and his picture of Mike Watt stuck to the front of his guitar, I reallized that his concerts are ‘hearing concerts’ if you know what I mean. Soon later, we finally received the long-awaited Master CD of his finished album, recorded in a former school in Uppakra in the Swedish middle-of nowhere with the help of his friends Carl Granberg, Mats Bengtsson, Peter Andersson, David Carlsson, Johan Hansson und Clay Ketter. There is no-one in Germany at the moment that makes more universal music than Home of the Lame. It is a bit like a soundtrack for a Gus van Sant Film that still has to be made. He would be Neil Young’s favorite musician, if he only knew him. So fly our beautiful, red haired, bad mooded bird with that unmistakable smile. Things are going to happen that you would have never thought of. Recently, we sat with Felix together in front of a Falafel Restaurant in Hamburg and talked about our biggest wish for the next year. He said “I absolutely want to play at least 150 concerts next year” and a moment later he showed us a photo of his sofa, that he always carries in his wallett. That’s Home of the Lame. And, if I really wish someone all the best, then it’s you and me Felix! Thees Uhlmann, October 2005 |
